Cabernet Sauvignon 86%, Merlot 14%
"A brilliant young wine, the 2016 Léoville Barton unwinds in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berries and cigar box mingled with subtle hints of loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's seamless and exquisitely balanced, with beautifully refined tannins, bright acids and a long, penetrating finish. Its structural refinement is such that it's far from forbidding to open right now, yet patience will be richly rewarded." - Robert Parkers Wine Advocate
"Terrific intensity of dark berries, almost peppery blackcurrants and violets with attractive and integrated, spicy oak and an earthy edge. The palate has a super powerful and long, linear core with plenty of fruit flesh strapped in tight for a long and thrilling ride into the finish. A blend of 86 per cent cabernet and 14 per cent merlot. Try from 2024." - James Suckling
2027-2055+." - Adrian van Velsen - vvWine.ch
"The 2016 Château Léoville Barton is utterly captivating in this vintage. It is composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot opens to pretty aromatics of currants and red berries woven together with sweet exotic spices, pipe tobacco, graphite and fresh florals all releasing from the glass. On the palate this medium-full bodied Saint-Julien continues to impress with its gorgeous plush texture and supportive tannins, along with its outstanding overall concentration. It displays remarkable balance of ripe fruit and bright acidity through the long, precise finish. This has it all, and while it will certainly require some significant cellaring readers will certainly be rewarded in due time with an absolutely beautiful wine." - International Wine Report
"Deep purple-colored and a classic Saint-Julien with its pure crème de cassis, graphite, liquid rock, and essence of lead pencil shavings, the 2016 Château Léoville Barton is full-bodied, concentrated, and backward, with bright acidity and ripe yet certainly present and building tannins. This old-school, classic Léoville Barton has a fine thread of acidity keeping the wine focused and fresh. It’s a beauty, but mostly potential at this point, although it does have beautiful fruit. Savvy readers will hide bottles at the back of their cellar, and I wouldn’t start to think about opening bottles for a least a decade. It’s going to be incredibly long-lived. The blend of the 2016 is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, brought up in 60% new French oak." - Jeb Dunnuck
- Weinwisser
"The nose is elegant, charmin , racy and offers a fine silkyness , complexity as well as a beautiful finesse in its power. This wine should be decanted. It reveals notes of wild blackberry and small wild black fruits associated with small touches of wild strawberry, violet, liquorice , hints of caramelized oak, Bourbon vanilla as well as very discreet hints of hazelnut/ripe almond and grilled/coffee. The palate is elegant, beautifully defined, racy, structured and offers a beautiful ripe/fleshy fruit, a beautiful density/intensity, power (but controled ) as well as a fine acidulous frame. On the palate this wine expresses notes of fleshy black cherry, fleshy blackberry and more slightly fleshy/juicy black cherry associated with fine touches of wild red fruits as well as hints of liquorice , chocolate and toasted. Tannins are elegant and well-built. There are fine touches of caramelized oak on the finish/persistence." - VertdeVin
"The Barton family's flagship wine benefits hugely from the age of the vines. This wine is ripe and concentrated, rich in tannins but with the wonderful black fruits that can be conjured from this vineyard. It will age well and is likely to be ready to drink from 2026" - Wine Enthusiast
- Falstaff
"Very fragrant nose blending fine leather, tobacco and discreet wood with ample dark fruit like cassis, cherry and black plum. Intense and dense palate with a rigid backbone of fine tannin, finely integrated oak and lush dark fruit with fine nuance and plenty of layers and an intense and lingering finish. Complex and well-built, already finely balanced but knowing how well it ages it should keep developing for a very long time." - Andreas Larsson - Tasted
