"The blend of the 2016 Pontet-Canet is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Around 55% of the wine was aged in new French oak barrels, 15% in two-year-old barrels and 35% in cement amphorae for 16 months. Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with opulent scents of plum preserves, spice cake, hoisin and crème de cassis with fragrant wafts of potpourri, wood smoke and rose hip tea. Medium to full-bodied, rich and decadent, with loads of spicy layers, it has a firm, velvety texture with great freshness and incredible depth, finishing very long and on a compelling mineral note.
2016 marks the 40th vintage at Pontet-Canet for Alfred Tesseron. Winemaker Jean-Michel Comme mentioned it was wet at the beginning of the year, but thankfully the weather changed in late June. Thus, 2016 was a more normal/typical mildew year, so the disease pressure wasn’t too much of an issue. Then it was very dry until fall. He believes the vintage could be compared to 1961 or 2010. The result is an uninhibited, truly singular showing of Pontet-Canet this year—perhaps the richest, most sumptuous and hedonic expression of the vintage of all the great Left Bank wines."

Die Spitzenregion Pauillac innerhalb des Bordeaux und das Château Pontet-Canet.
Das Pauillac in der französischen Region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ist zweifellos das prominenteste AOC-Gebiet im Bordelais und zum Inbegriff für edle Bordeaux-Weine geworden. Hier besteht die höchste Dichte an Châteaux der Spitzen-Kategorie Grand Cru oder großes Gewächs. Darunter befinden sich auch die berühmten Rothschild-Châteaux. Dominiert werden die ungewöhnlich langlebigen Rotweine von der Rebsorte Cabernet Sauvignon. Sie fühlt sich auf den starken Kiesböden besonders wohl. Einen zusätzlichen Reiz erhält das Gebiet durch Europas größte Flussmündung, die die Gironde bei Pauillac auf ihrem Weg zum Atlantik bildet. Ausflugsmöglichkeiten zu den berühmten Châteaux und die französische Küche, die hier eine besondere Lamm-Spezialität bereithält, machen das Pauillac nicht nur für Weinkenner zu einer beliebten Urlaubsregion.
Die Ursprünge von Château Pontet-Canet gehen bereits bis ins frühe 14. Jahrhundert zurück. Danach wechselten die Besitzer des Weingutes mehrmals, bis schließlich Jean-François de Pontet das Weingut erwarb. Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts führte er mehrere Parzellen zusammen, um die Rebfläche des Weingutes schrittweise zu vergrößern – die Weinqualität verbesserte sich in den folgenden Jahren stetig. Folgerichtig wurde Château Pontet-Canet im Jahr 1855 mit dem Titel „Cinquiéme Grand Cru“ geadelt und in die Reihe der besten Gewächse von Bordeaux aufgenommen. Als der Unternehmer Herman Cruse das Anwesen 1865 erwarb, ließ er sowohl die Produktionsräume als auch die Weinkeller modernisieren, um beste Voraussetzungen für dauerhaft exzellente Weine zu schaffen.
Die neue Geschichte von Château Pontet-Canet beginnt dann im Jahr 1975, als Guy Tesseron das Weingut übernahm. Mit hohen Investitionen und klarer Ausrichtung auf qualitätsorientierten Anbau der Trauben sowie dem sorgsamen Ausbau der Weine unter der Regie seines jüngsten Sohnes Alfred Tesseron, konnte das Weingut seit Beginn der 1990er-Jahre seinen Rang als 5ème Cru eindrucksvoll untermauern. Die Reben scheinen wie befreit und die Trauben waren noch nie so perfekt gereift. Seit vielen Jahren gehört Château Pontet-Canet inzwischen zu den renommiertesten Weingütern in Bordeaux und die Weine des vergangenen Jahrzehnts zählen zu den besten Werten in Pauillac.
